Salinas man answers door, shot several times

If you’re not in a gang, Salinas is a safe town.

Most of the time, it’s true.

But once in a while — without warning — gang violence comes knocking on the wrong door.

It happened about 1:55 p.m. Sunday on the 900 block of Rockrose Street.

A 33-year-old man heard a knock at his front door. He answered to an unexpected visitor who asked for his gang affiliation.

Salinas police say the resident doesn’t have any and slammed the door shut.

Wrong answer.

The man outside aimed his gun at the front door and opened fire, striking the victim several times.

Medical crews flew the victim to a Bay Area hospital. Police say he’s expected to live.

The gunman is dark complected, about 16 or 17 years of age, and about 5 feet 6 or 5 feet 7.

Police said he wore a black San Francisco Giants beanie and a black pullover jacket and was last seen running to a waiting white or gold Cadillac Escalade with a lowered front end and chrome rims.

Anyone who has information on this crime is asked to call police at 758-7321. To remain anonymous: 775-4222.
